History and significance

Bridge 5923 carries State Highway 61 over the Pigeon River at the Canadian border (Ontario Highway 61) in Cook County. The steel stringer bridge, constructed in 1962, was the first bridge at this crossing. It is significant as an international crossing. As the first structure located at this crossing, this bridge was part of transportation initiatives by local proponents to connect Minnesota and Canada by providing an additional point of entry that relieved congestion at established border crossings, connected important market or industrial routes to Winnipeg, and expanded recreation and tourism.
