History and significance

Bridge 38001 carries a single track of the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range (DM&IR) Railway over U.S. Highway 61 near Two Harbors in Lake County. Built in 1962, it is a 172.9-foot-long, four-span, steel multi-beam bridge aligned on a long curve that continues over the bridge. Noted Minnesota bridge engineer Walter Hall Wheeler (1883-1974) designed the structure to accommodate the curve with unusual skewed spans and skewed piers.

Bridge 38001 is a contributing resource to the Trunk Highway 61 Expressway Historic District.
