History & significance

Bridge 96501 is a single-span, precast concrete arch bridge constructed in 1988 under the MnDOT non-proprietary design with a circular arch. It carries County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 2/Forest Highway 15 over the Stewart River in Lake County. The bridge is one of three simultaneously designed in 1988, the first year MnDOT implemented its response to the patented precast BEBO bridge design, introduced in Minnesota in 1981. Bridge 96501, the first of the three constructed, represents engineering significance as an example of the experimental precast concrete arch bridge type, thereby providing competition among potential precast structures.
