History & significance

Bridge 91940 is a single-span, precast concrete arch bridge constructed in 1982 under the proprietary BEBO patent. It carries County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 3 over the Chippewa River in New Prairie Township, Pope County. The BEBO bridge design was developed by Swiss civil engineer Werner Heierli in the 1960s. The patented parabolic design involved complex engineering and included precasting of headwalls, wingwalls, the arch, and arch base. Bridge 91940 is significant as an early example of a BEBO patent precast arch bridge constructed in Minnesota.
