Bridge 69100, also known as the Richard I. Bong Bridge, is a large steel tied arch bridge carrying U.S. Highway 2 over Interstate Highway 35 and the Saint Louis Bay of Lake Superior between Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin. An extreme length and “high bridge” design were needed to complete the crossing and to allow for navigation within Saint Louis Bay. The result is the longest extant structure in Minnesota, measuring 1.5 miles long, achieved with a horizontal curve. It is a significant example of distinctive engineering in response to its unique site conditions.
