History & significance
The Smith Avenue High Bridge carries Smith Avenue/Trunk Highway 149 over the Union Pacific Railroad, Shepard Road, Randolph Avenue, the Mississippi River, and Water Street West in Saint Paul, Ramsey County. This bridge was constructed in 1986 to replace an earlier 1889 steel deck truss bridge at this site. Because of the unique site conditions and public demand for an arch bridge at this site, MnDOT engineers, in collaboration with consultants T.Y. Lin International Firm and Strgar-Roscoe, Inc., designed a tied-arch bridge with double cantilever arches and the post-tensioned cable system below the deck. The result is a bridge that stands out amongst other tied arch bridges in the state with redundancy design and majestic arched main spans. It is significant for its distinctive engineering.
