Active Transportation Program
The Active Transportation (AT) Program provides grants to make walking, biking and rolling better. Our grants aim to increase the number of people walking and biking to destinations by:
- Providing funding for:
- Planning
- Education and encouragement
- Engineering studies
- Infrastructure investment
- Supporting Minnesota Strategic Highway Safety Plan (PDF) goals:
- Make walking and biking safer, easier, and more accessible
- Advancing Sustainable Transportation Advisory Council recommendations:
- Reduce vehicle miles traveled
- Improve transportation options
- Connecting to MnDOT's planning work advancing walking and bicycling

For studies and infrastructure plans that improve the places where people walk and bike
Non-infrastructure grants
For studies and infrastructure plans that improve the places where people walk and bike
Planning assistance
Active Transportation Program planning assistance grants will connect applicants with an active transportation planning team to conduct community, neighborhood or corridor planning.
Demonstration project technical assistance
Demonstration project technical assistance will support communities with existing Active Transportation plans, or other active transportation approaches, in undertaking the process to plan, design and implement a demonstration project in their community.
