Spray on Rejuvenator Synthesis

Status: Complete
Project Start Date: May 10, 2019
Project End Date: October 21, 2019

Project abstract

Rejuvenator is applied to reverse the aging of recycled material, which has been oxidized, in constructing new pavement. This allows the use of more recycled material and thus its application provides both cost and environmental benefits. The objective of this project is to document the field projects constructed to evaluate spray on rejuvenators by National Road Research Alliance (NRRA) member states, National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), Minnesota cities and counties. This project will also include recent research projects performed by Missouri Department of Transportation with Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA). The final report should serve as a work plan for the rejuvenator test sections.

Methodology summary

The goal of this project is to generate a synthesis on the field installations of rejuvenators and comparison between the different installations. The first part of the project would involve an extensive data collection effort from different states and institutions involved, followed by an analysis on the information gathered. Recommendations and conclusions will be provided once the performance of the rejuvenators and results have been evaluated. All this information will be incorporated to a report to serve as a reference to the public in the decision-making process.

Tasks

Task 1D: Research Synthesis

The PI will compile information on field installations of spray on rejuvenators, which could include but is not limited to locations installed, products applied, binder properties, friction, aging, and field performance of test sections. The constructed projects will include spray on rejuvenators conducted by the seven NRRA member states (Caltrans, Illinois DOT, Michigan DOT, Minnesota DOT, Missouri DOT, North Dakota DOT, and Wisconsin DOT) if available, and up to three other researches (NCAT, NCHRP, MN cities and counties) specified by the NRRA Technical Liaison.

  • Anticipated Start Date: May 1, 2019
  • Scheduled Date to Submit Draft Deliverable: June 30, 2019
  • Scheduled Date for Task Final Approval: August 31, 2019
  • Duration: Four months
  • Deliverable: A report summarizing the information compiled under Task 1 and a meeting with the NRRA Technical Liaison to discuss findings.

Task 2D: Analysis of Data

The PI will analyze the data collected from Task 1 and compare the projects in terms of the products applied, testing done, cost, and field performance.

  • Anticipated Start Date: May 1, 2019
  • Scheduled Date to Submit Draft Deliverable: June 30, 2019
  • Scheduled Date for Task Final Approval: August 31, 2019
  • Duration: Four months
  • Deliverable: A brief report summarizing the data analyzed under Task 2 and a meeting with the NRRA Technical Liaison to discuss results.

Task 3D Compile Report, Technical Advisory Panel Review, and Revisions

The PI will prepare a draft final report, following MnDOT publication guidelines, to document project activities, findings and recommendations. This report will be reviewed by the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP), updated by the PI to incorporate technical comments, and then approved by the Technical Liaison before this task is considered complete. If possible, a TAP meeting will be scheduled to facilitate the discussion of the draft report.

  • Anticipated Start Date: July 1, 2019
  • Scheduled Date to Submit Draft Final Report for TAP review: July 31, 2019
  • Scheduled Date for Final Report Approval: September 30, 2019
  • Duration: Three months including TAP review, discussion, and PI revisions
  • Deliverables: A draft final report for TAP review, and a revised report that is technically complete and approved by the TL for publication.

Task 4D: Editorial Review and Publication of Final Report

During this task, the PI will work directly with MnDOT’s contract editors to address editorial comments and finalize the document in a timely manner. The contract editors will publish the report and ensure it meets publication standards.

  • Scheduled Start Date: August 1, 2019
  • Scheduled End Date: September 30, 2019
  • Duration: Two months (required)
  • Deliverables: Final Publishable Report that meets MnDOT’s editorial guidelines and standards.

Task 5D: Field Installation

The PI will coordinate with the Contractor to implement the results from synthesis into field contract. This will involve 2 to 4 employees working with the Contractor for 2 to 4 days of time.

  • Scheduled Start Date: June 1, 2019
  • Scheduled End Date: September 30, 2019
  • Duration: Four months
  • Deliverables: Assistance with the field test section installation.
