Hwy 27 roundabout

I-94 eastbound ramps near Alexandria

Reopened July 7! Watch for workers, minor traffic impacts in the upcoming weeks.

Project details

The Minnesota Department of Transportation, in partnership with Douglas County, constructed roundabouts at the eastbound and westbound ramps at the Interstate 94 and Highway 27/County Road 45/46 interchange. These projects improve safety and efficiency along the I-94/Highway 27/County Road 46 corridors, which connect multiple commercial businesses and local traffic to I-94 and serve as important connector routes for Alexandria. The improvements enhance traffic performance, mobility and driver satisfaction at the Hwy 27 & Interstate 94 interchange.

MnDOT completed a study in 2019 that analyzed potential roadway improvements to mitigate issues identified by local stakeholders, Douglas County staff and MnDOT staff. For more information about the County project, please contact Douglas County Public Works.

Traffic impacts

The Highway 27/County Road 45/46 interchange reopened on July 7. Expect to see workers and potential lane shifts/shoulder closures as remaining work is completed under traffic.

Other area projects/impacts motorists should be aware of:
Is the four-way stop at Highway 27/Highway 114 permanent?

The four-way stop at the Highway 27/Highway 114 intersection that was installed during the interchange construction will remain in place. It was deemed in the best interest of the traveling public to leave the four-way stop in place as an intermediate safety improvement until a roundabout is constructed at this intersection in 2025. The four-way stop allows traffic to stop and take turns when entering the intersection, reducing left-turning crashes along Highway 27 and provides Highway 114 traffic an opportunity to find a gap in Highway 27 traffic, which is currently difficult with the existing intersection skew.
