Utility Coordination

Purpose

The purpose of utility coordination is to ensure effective communication among all parties whose work impacts utility facilities on transportation projects. This communication creates good working relationships between MnDOT and utility owners and gives us the opportunity to resolve potential issues in a timely and cost effective manner.

When to use this subject

You are required to conduct utility coordination on all Process B construction projects. See the Utility Accommodation and Coordination Manual to see the specific steps you need to perform on different types of projects.

How this subject fits into the overall project development process

Utility coordination begins during the layout and preliminary design phase. Preconstruction coordination should be complete by project turn in.

Utilities can affect almost any part of a project. Careful coordination allows everyone involved to make informed decisions and resolve any conflicts before they come up in the field during construction.
