Reclaiming Indigenous Research in Higher Education

National Indian Education Association

"The National Indian Education Association (NIEA) was formed in 1970, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by Native educators who were anxious to find solutions to improve the education system for Native children. The NIEA Convention was established to mark the beginning of a national forum for sharing and developing ideas, and influencing federal policy." NIEA promotes tribal educational sovereignty, the use of traditional knowledge and language, improving educational opportunities and results within Native communities." (Native contributor)

Native Nations Institute

"Located on Tohono O’odham Nation traditional homelands the Native Nations Institute for Leadership, Management, and Policy (NNI) was founded in 2001 by The University of Arizona and the Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation as a self-determination, self-governance, and development resource for Native nations. It is housed at the university's Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy. NNI assists in building capable Native nations that can effectively pursue and ultimately realize their own political, economic, and community development objectives. St. Cloud State American Indian Center

"Early in the 1990s, a number of campus community members became concerned about meeting the unique needs of the American Indian students attending St. Cloud State University. Indian programming had become a component of the Minority Student Programs. Through the efforts of an advisory committee, an American Indian Center was established in 1993. Educational, social, and cultural programming specific to American Indian students increased. Outreach activities for both Indian and non-Indian communities also were developed. The number and quality of programs continues to grow and are now carried on throughout the year." (Minnesotan)

University of Minnesota Duluth - American Indian Learning Resource Center
