Pavement Design

Purpose

The Pavement Design Unit provides technical expertise on pavement design, determines timing of seasonal load restrictions, and administers the pavement-type selection process. The unit also maintains and operates non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment for district testing, including falling-weight deflectometers (FWD) and a skid truck and trailer for friction testing.

When to use this subject

Pavement Design is needed on all projects that include grading, pavement repair, or pavement replacement.

The District Materials Unit develops a Material Design Recommendation (MDR) to communicate pavement and geotechnical design recommendations to the project designers.

For specific process information, see the other guidance page and/or contact the individuals listed on the contacts page.

How this subject fits into the overall project development process

Once final scoping has been completed, a final typical section has been produced, and a layout showing changes in vertical or horizontal alignment is finished (or is not required), pavement design can begin. Pavement design must be complete in order for final design to proceed.
