Construction began April 4 and is scheduled to be complete late August 2022 with the following work:

  • Resurfacing approximately 8.6 miles of I-90 eastbound from 2.5 miles east of Mower Co. Rd. 1 to .9 miles east of Hwy 63 in Olmsted County.
  • Resurfacing interchange ramps at Co. Hwy 6 and Hwy 63.
  • Improving and repairing guardrail and drainage throughout project.
  • Resurfacing car parking lot of High Forest Rest Area and improving entrance/exit ramps and facility accessibility.
  • Improving four bridges:
    • I-90 eastbound bridge over Root River: Replacing both approach panels, constructing four new end posts, replacing guardrail, resurfacing bridge deck and applying new surface finish coating to pier caps, abutment wing walls and abutment stem faces.
    • I-90 westbound bridge over Root River: Replacing part of both approach panels, constructing four new bridge end posts and replacing guardrail.
    • Co. Hwy 6 bridge over I-90: Removing and replacing westbound pier struts, adding median and eastbound pier struts and replacing guardrail.
    • Co. Hwy 15 bridge over I-90: Removing and replacing westbound pier struts, adding median and eastbound pier struts and replacing guardrail.

Traffic impacts

  • Beginning April 4: Eastbound I-90 traffic is reduced to one lane west of Mower Co. Rd. 15 to east of Olmsted Co. Rd. 6. This will last through the end of the project in late August.
  • Beginning April 4: Eastbound entrance ramp to I-90 at Co. Rd. 6 is closed and detoured.
    • Go east on Co. Rd. 6 into Stewartville then north on Hwy 63 to the I-90 interchange.
  • Beginning April 25: Westbound I-90 motorists west of Stewartville will have single-lane traffic through the work zone near Olmsted Co. Rd. 6. This will last for approximately three weeks.
  • Beginning May 9: High Forest Rest Area will be closed. It is scheduled to re-open Thursday, June 30.
  • May 25 and 26: Motorists on eastbound I-90 will encounter brief off-ramp closures at High Forest (Olmsted Co. Rd. 6) and Stewartville (Hwy 63).
    • People can use the Hwy 63 ramp while Co. Rd. 6 is closed and use the Co. Rd. 6 off-ramp when the Hwy 63 ramp is closed.
    • The ramps will be closed just during the work to remove the pavement and again to pave the ramps but will be open each day by evening.
  • Detour will be required for the ramp work on Hwy 63 interchanges.
