US Steel Creek culvert construction will require a detour of Hwy 23 onto West Gary Street and Becks Road as part of this project. The detour is expected to last 3 weeks.
Gogebic Creek culvert construction will reduce Hwy 23 traffic to one lane in each direction for the duration of the project.

Summary of work
For US Steel Creek, the deteriorating drainage structure is resulting in reduced hydraulic capacity and distress to Hwy 23. Culvert replacement will provide for adequate hydraulic capacity, structural stability, and road core integrity.
For Gogebic Creek, the deteriorating drainage structure is resulting in reduced hydraulic capacity, distress to Hwy 23 and Willard Munger Trail. Culvert replacement will provide for adequate hydraulic capacity, structural stability and road core integrity.
The planned project schedule has construction occurring May through August 2023. There will be three stages of construction. Stage 1 will include Gogebic Creek and Munger Trail detours. In Stage 2, the Munger Trail will be reconstructed and there will be a temporary bypass of Highway 23. In Stage 3, the US Steel Creek culvert will be constructed.

Upcoming Meetings
On Tuesday, June 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Gary New Duluth Community Center (801 101st Avenue W, Duluth, MN 55808), a meeting to discuss the project will be held. Information presented will be recorded and put here on the website following the meeting.
The Willard Munger State Trail will be reconstructed as part of this project, causing impacts to bikes and pedestrians. During Stage 1 of the project, the trail will be detoured onto Highway 23. Once the trail has been reconstructed in Stage 2, it will be reopened while the portion of the culvert under Highway 23 is under construction.
