New temporary traffic control e-Learning series
By: Alyssa Rubenstrunk, State Aid Communications Program Manager
MnDOT has partnered with the University of Minnesota’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) to launch a new series of online trainings on work zone safety and temporary traffic control. These e-Learning’s are designed to help transportation professionals, local agencies, and contractors improve safety practices and reduce risks on roadways.
The series includes 13 e-Learning modules organized into two learning paths. The Orientation to Work Zone Safety path offers two role based options, with each module focusing on different aspects of safe work zone operations. The Core Temporary Traffic Control path includes 11 modules that cover key concepts and principles. In addition, the modular structure allows participants to select the topics that best match their agency’s roadway system and typical work activities.
These modules were developed with input from listening sessions held with local agencies, transportation partners, and private sector organizations whose employees work in or near the roadway. Their feedback emphasized the importance of providing training that is interactive, frequent, available in multiple formats, and accessible on demand. This input guided the design, organization, and module content. These online modules also provide the foundational knowledge necessary for effective participation in classroom based temporary traffic control training.
The series can be accessed at https://mnltap.umn.edu/programs/workzone. Participants who complete the training through LTAP may apply it toward the Roads Scholar: Maintenance Operations and Technical Certificate.
For MnDOT employees, all 13 modules are available through the agency’s Learning Center by searching “TTC.”
