Webinar on Vulnerable Road User safety strategies
By: Girma Feyissa, State Aid Traffic Safety Engineer
You're invited: April 7, 2026, webinar on Vulnerable Road User (VRU) safety strategies
CAV stands for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV). CAV technologies include vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technologies, using wireless exchange of data to allow vehicles to communicate between one another and with the roadway infrastructure. CAV technology is a broad term that combines both CV (connected vehicle) and AV (automated vehicle) technology.
MnDOT State Aid and the Office of Traffic Engineering are excited to announce the launch of a new webinar series focused on traffic safety countermeasures aimed at those supporting the design, operation, and maintenance of roads.
This webinar was developed in direct response to feedback from participants in last year’s local roads traffic safety workshops. Attendees expressed a strong interest in continued learning opportunities, especially on topics that address common roadway safety challenges. In response, MnDOT is introducing a more focused format that allows agencies to engage with timely safety content from wherever they are.
The first webinar on VRU safety countermeasures will take place April 7, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, and will be hosted virtually via Microsoft Teams.
Why VRUs?
Fatalities of the most vulnerable road users in Minnesota and across the United States are increasing at an alarming rate. Bicyclists and pedestrians are VRUs who face a disproportionately high risk of being killed or seriously injured on our roads. Our transportation network is not truly a safe system unless it’s a safe system for our most vulnerable road users. This virtual event will provide insights into infrastructure-based strategies and practical solutions to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and others at higher risk.
Who should attend?
This event is designed specifically for professionals who influence traffic safety decisions on any and all local roads, including:
- County and city engineers and planners
- DOT staff
- Traffic safety and public works personnel
- Transportation consultants
- Anyone working on local road infrastructure or safety initiatives
Whether you're a seasoned professional or just beginning to engage with traffic safety strategies, this webinar offers valuable insights and tools that can support your work
What to expect
Participants will gain:
- A better understanding of VRU trends and contributing factors
- Practical, cost-effective countermeasures that can be applied locally
- Real-world project examples from Minnesota implemented by local transportation agencies
- Contacts and resources to help plan and implement safety improvements
The webinar will also include a live Q&A session, giving attendees the chance to ask questions and share ideas with subject matter experts.
