2025 statewide functional classification update process

By: Loren Hil, Program Support Engineer

MnDOT is beginning the 2025 statewide functional classification update process as required by the FHWA. Federal regulations require states to undergo this process following the 2020 Census urban boundary adjustments. Please see attachment (Word) for further information on the process.

MnDOT is offering informational sessions regarding the process. The first session was already held on April 30th with more than 60 participants.  The second session will be on Monday, May 12th at 9:30 a.m. This session will provide an overview of the process required by FHWA following the 2020 Census, review the classification criteria, discuss timelines, and outline the roles and responsibilities of local agencies and MnDOT staff. It is important that staff involved in reviewing or coordinating functional classification recommendations are aware of this process. This will be an interactive session with time for questions and answers.

The May 12th session details are below or add this session to your calendar (ICS).

  • Monday, May 12, 2025 from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
