Upcoming I-494 traffic impacts include weekend closure, July 17-20

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — Construction on I-494 will result in a set of traffic impacts this week headlined by a weekend closure, July 17-20 between Highway 100 and Highway 77, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and be prepared for these upcoming closures.

Overnight I-494 closure, July 14-15

Beginning at 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 through 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 15 crews will close I-494 in both directions between I-35W and Highway 77. Motorists can use I-35W, Highway 62 and Highway 77 as a detour. All ramps on I-494 between I-35W and Highway 77 will also be closed. This closure is to allow crews to pour the 12th Avenue South bridge deck.

Portland Avenue to westbound I-494 ramp closure, July 16-20

Starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 16 through 5 a.m. Monday, July 20 crews will close the ramp from Portland Avenue to westbound I-494. Motorists can use American Boulevard to Penn Avenue as a detour.

Overnight I-494 and I-35W ramp closures, July 16-17

Starting 9 p.m. Thursday, July 16 through 5 a.m. Friday, July 17  the ramp from eastbound I-494 to northbound I-35W will be closed and the southbound I-35W ramp to eastbound I-494 will be closed.

Weekend I-494 closure, July 17-20

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, July 17 through 5 a.m. Monday, July 20, crews will close I-494 in both directions between Highway 100 and Highway 77. Motorists can use Highway 100, Highway 62 and Highway 77 as a detour. This work has the potential to result in elevated construction noise throughout the duration of the closure — during the day, night and overnight.

All ramps on I-494 between Highway 100 and Highway 77 will also be closed.

This weekend closure is necessary to allow crews to perform pipe crossing installations and other mainline work.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather dependent and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution and slow down in work zones where workers are present.

About the I-494 project

Construction to improve I-494 in Bloomington, Edina and Richfield is taking place across multiple projects. The first project began in 2023 and will be completed in fall 2026. The second project is scheduled to start in 2027 and will be completed in fall 2030.

The primary goal of the I-494 work is to reduce congestion, improve travel times and safety, and enhance access for people walking, biking and using transit.

A key improvement will provide I-494 E-ZPass lanes from Highway 169 in Edina to Highway 77 in Richfield. The E-ZPass lanes are scheduled to be open by 2030. Another core improvement is new ramps at the I-35W and I-494 interchange that will give motorists a safer merging experience. These ramps are scheduled to be completed in 2026.
