Traffic sign replacement begins April 27 in South Central Minnesota

MANKATO, Minn. —The replacement of traffic signs which are at the end of their service lives will begin on April 27 along several highways in South Central Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Traffic signs located on various highways and Interstate 90 in the following locations will be replaced:

  • I-90 from Magnolia to east of Worthington
  • Hwy 4 near the Brown County line to Hwy 68 north of Sleepy Eye
  • Hwy 68 from Morgan to Hwy 4

MnDOT replaces traffic signs on a 15-year cycle to ensure signs are legible for motorists during the day and at night. Over time, traffic signs experience wear and tear, and frequently lose reflectivity in low-light conditions long before indications of their age are obvious in normal conditions.

There will be little impact to traffic on other state highways during the sign replacement, however, MnDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution and watch for crews working near the roadway. The project is expected to be completed by early May, weather permitting.

Sir Lines-A-Lot, LLC was awarded the project with a bid of $1,218,030.00.

Important work zone safety reminders:

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones and mobile devices, adjusting the radio or eating while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at www.511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
