Hwy 97 closure in Forest Lake begins June 2

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — Motorists will encounter a road closure and detour on Hwy 97 as crews begin road reconstruction work in Forest Lake according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Beginning at 5 a.m. Monday, June 2, both directions of Hwy 97 between Hornsby Street and Falcon Avenue will be closed. The closure will be in place through late fall 2025.

Motorists can bypass the closure using the following detours:

  • Eastbound through traffic can use northbound Interstate 35 to eastbound Hwy 8 to southbound Hwy 61.
  • Westbound through traffic can use northbound Hwy 61 to westbound Hwy 8 to southbound I-35.
  • Southbound I-35 traffic can access eastbound Hwy 97 by using Broadway Avenue to northbound I-35 to eastbound Hwy 8 to southbound Hwy 61.

Hornsby Street and all I-35 ramps will remain open. Hwy 97 will be open to traffic between Falcon Avenue and Hwy 61. Local residential and business access will be maintained throughout construction, although routes will change periodically.

This work is part of a larger two-year Hwy 97 road improvement project between I-35 and Hwy 61 to extend the usability and longevity of the pavement and improve ride quality for motorists. The work also aims to improve safety and traffic flow while providing better access for pedestrians and bicyclists.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule dependent and subject to change.

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution and slow down in work zones where workers are present.
