We are designing and constructing a new bridge in Minneapolis to connect the Seward neighborhood south of I-94 with Augsburg University and the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood north of I-94. The new bridge will be constructed to align with 22nd Ave. South.
The original I-94/22nd Ave. South bicycle and pedestrian bridge was constructed in 1962. In 2019, a truck hit the bridge, damaging it beyond repair, and we installed a temporary bridge in its place. The temporary bridge will remain open during construction of the new bridge.
To gather public input for the new design of the bridge, we conducted community engagement in 2024-2025. The input collected during public engagement is being used to support the final design, which will be completed in January 2027.
Summary of work
Rebuild pedestrian bridge over I-94 in Minneapolis
Key features of the final bridge design
The following features were favored throughout public engagement and will be included in the final design of the bridge:
Alignment with 22nd Ave. South
Curving “switchback” ramps on either side to reduce the steepness of the incline from the roadway to the bridge and improve accessibility
Wider bridge — the new bridge path will be 14 feet (the previous bridge path width was 8 feet)
Public art component
Help shape the bridge's art
The bridge will feature an art element that reflects and celebrates the surrounding neighborhoods by incorporating insights and ideas from the public.
The local artists creating this public art installation want to hear from the communities that live, work and play near the bridge. Help inspire the images and symbols that will exist on the art installation—take this short survey and share your stories of the neighborhood!
Traffic impacts
