Function

The USFWS is a bureau within the United States Department of the Interior. This agency is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife, and plans and their habitats and is responsible for implementing some of the nation’s most important environmental laws. There is an array of programs under the USFWS, including the protection and recovery of threatened and endangers species, monitoring and management of migratory birds, restoration of nationally significant fisheries, enforcement of federal wildlife laws and regulation of international wildlife trade, conservation and restoration of fish and wildlife habitat such as wetlands, assistance to federal governments through international conservation efforts, and fulfillment of federal tribal trust responsibility.
