POSTPONED: Weekend closure of Interstate 94 postponed due to anticipated adverse weather conditions
Weekend closure for bridge construction is rescheduled for January 23-25, 2026
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Officials have postponed the planned weekend closure of I-94 scheduled this weekend (January 16-18) due to anticipated severe cold and adverse safety conditions. Weather permitting, the city of St. Paul will close the interstate and set beams for the new Kellogg Blvd/3rd Street bridge next weekend, Friday, Jan. 23 through Sunday, Jan. 25.
During next weekend’s work, both directions of Interstate 94 will close from 10 p.m. Friday evening, Jan. 23 until 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25. Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, there will be single lane closures in both directions of the interstate. The westbound lanes of the interstate will then fully close at 10 p.m. between Highway 61/Mounds Blvd. and Highway 52/Lafayette Freeway followed by a full closure of the eastbound interstate at 11 p.m. from Highway 52/Lafayette Freeway to Highway 61.
Access from the interstate to local streets, including Etna St. and Wilson Ave. will be prohibited and all westbound I-94 traffic will be routed southbound on Highway 61. The exits to Burns Avenue also will be closed to reduce cut-through traffic on local streets. There also will be no access to eastbound I-94 from I-35E or from cross streets in the closure area. Westbound I-94 traffic will be able to exit I-94 at Highway 61/Mounds Boulevard. Eastbound I-94 motorists will be able to exit I-94 at 7th Street and Highway 52/Lafayette Freeway. Mounds Boulevard local traffic will be able to enter eastbound and westbound I-94
Motorists who want to reach downtown St. Paul from east of the closure should take Highway 61 south to Warner/Shepard Rd. Traffic wanting to access local eastside St. Paul streets from the east should exit on White Bear Ave.
The weekend closure will allow city of St. Paul construction crews to deliver and set beams for the new Kellogg Blvd./3rd Street bridge over the interstate east of downtown St. Paul. Construction crews will work throughout much of the weekend to place beams before the interstate is reopened around 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. Nearby residents and businesses may experience some construction noise around the clock, including trucks hauling beams and cranes setting beams.
During the I-94 closure, motorists will follow signed detours:
- Eastbound I-94: North on I-35E, east on I-694 and south on I-694 to the I-94/I-494/I-694 interchange in Woodbury.
- Westbound I-94: North on I-694, east on I-694 and south on I-35E to westbound I-94.
The Kellogg Blvd./3rd Street bridge closed July 24, 2024. The city of St Paul is replacing the bridge to address the need for a more reliable connection to the city that will accommodate people walking, biking, taking transit and driving. The project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2027.
We appreciate your patience during this bridge project. Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination.
