I-90 eastbound traffic exiting to Hwy 52 southbound detoured
ROCHESTER, Minn.– Eastbound Interstate 90 motorists who use Exit 217 to travel south on Hwy 52 at Marion will be detoured beginning Tuesday or Wednesday to improve safety at the construction site, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
There have been recent reports of motorists making wrong turns and driving up the I-90 off-ramp instead of following the correct route past the flyover bridge to reach eastbound I-90. A crash was reported at the location Monday.
MnDOT has added signs and barricades for traffic in past months. MnDOT plans to close the median to stop this southbound turn. It will remain until construction is completed later in 2026.
Motorists exiting eastbound I-90 to travel southbound on Highway 52 will be detoured 1 mile north on Hwy 52 to Exit 47 (Marion Road/County Road 111, County Road 36), where they exit, cross over Hwy 52 and then turn onto southbound Hwy 52. Approximately 136 daily vehicles make the eastbound to southbound turn. Approximately 6,800 vehicles a day make the southbound Hwy 52 to eastbound I-90 turn, according to past MnDOT analysis.
This interchange is the location of a construction site where crews are replacing two I-90 bridges, building a Hwy 52 flyover bridge and reconstructing interchange ramps. Construction began in 2024 and is expected to be completed later this year.
