Hwy 99 Minnesota River Bridge

St. Peter

Construction Update

The majority of the work to restore the Historic Highway 99 bridge was completed in 2017 and it opened to traffic in November. In late spring of 2018, remaining touch-up paint work on the Highway 99 bridge will require single lane closures for up to three weeks, but the bridge will be open to traffic.

History

Built in 1931, Bridge #4930 is a steel truss bridge over the Minnesota River on the east side of Saint Peter. This bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of 24 bridges selected across the state of Minnesota for special preservation.

The Hwy 99 Bridge is a fracture critical bridge located in the 100-year flood elevation with corrosion in the steel members and deterioration of concrete in the bearing support and parapet wall. It has a sufficiency rating of 47.1 and is inspected every year. Some repairs and rehabilitation have taken place in the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1980’s and most recently in 2009 the east and west abutments were repaired and the gusset plates repaired and painted. The 2010 fall floods damaged the railing and light pole.
