Bridges Open to Traffic

The Mille Lacs County bridge on County Road 29/Rum River Drive south of the roundabout intersection will opened to traffic on Friday, Nov. 19, after the ribbon cutting ceremony.

A protective coating is to be applied to the bridges for the winter with final painting to be done next year.

Project is Complete

Overview

In June 2010, the Minnesota Department of Transportation in partnership with Mille Lacs County are to construct a $5.9 million project in that will improve safety, mobility and roadway access in the city of Princeton.

The project included reconstructing the Highway 95 bridge over the Rum River, the Mille Lacs County Road 29 bridge over the west branch of the Rum River and a new single lane roundabout at Highway 95 and Mille Lacs County Road 29.

In spring 2011, crews will return to complete landscaping, permanent road markings and paint the bridge structures.

Why a Roundabout

Roundabouts are used as a "traffic calming" measure. Due to slower speeds, and angle of collision impact, safety at a roundabout can be dramatically improved when compared to a traditional four-way intersection.

A study by the National Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that intersections converted to roundabouts show a 39 percent decrease in all crashes and an 89 percent decrease in fatal crashes. Pedestrians are also safer in roundabouts because traffic is moving more slowly.
