New roundabout opens improving safety and traffic flow north of Onamia

BAXTER, Minn. –  The Minnesota Department of Transportation announces that the new roundabout at the north junction of Highway 27 and Highway 169 north of Onamia, Mille Lacs County, is now open.

MnDOT reopened direct access to and from Highway 27 at Highway 169 earlier in October. Motorists, pedestrians and visitors can expect improved safety and smoother travel through the intersection.

The new four-legged roundabout is designed to reduce severe crashes by lowering vehicle speeds and minimizing high-risk turning movements. In addition to the roundabout, the project includes reconstructed local entrances and new pedestrian crosswalks.

How to navigate the new roundabout

Many drivers may be unfamiliar with the new traffic pattern. MnDOT encourages motorists to follow these important tips when navigating the roundabout:

  • Yield to traffic already in the roundabout. Vehicles inside have the right of way.
  • Slow down as you approach. Watch for signs, lane markings and pedestrians.
  • Do not stop inside the roundabout. Keep moving unless it’s necessary to avoid a collision.
  • Use your turn signal when exiting. Signal right as you pass the exit before the one you intend to take.

MnDOT thanks the traveling public, residents and area businesses for their patience throughout construction.
