Lane restrictions on Interstate 90 east of Luverne begin Nov. 2

MANKATO, Minn. – Drivers should expect lane and shoulder closures on Interstate 90 at Elk Creek east of Luverne beginning Nov. 2 as crews install riprap (rock) to stabilize slopes, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The area sustained significant flooding and damage in 2024. Crews will place riprap near Elk Creek to stabilize slopes and reduce further erosion.

Drivers can anticipate lane closures in both directions of I-90 near the creek. MnDOT urgers drivers to slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and be alert for trucks hauling materials.

The project is expected to be complete in late November, weather permitting. Town & Country Excavating LLC was awarded the project with a bid of $292,076.50.

Work zone safety

Drivers should always be prepared to encounter traffic changes when approaching work zones, including lane closures, lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, slow-moving heavy equipment and slow or stopped traffic. To keep everyone safe, drivers should:

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones and mobile devices, adjusting the radio or eating while in work zones.
  • Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
  • Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at 511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
  • Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
  • Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
