Highway 218 south/21st Street NE bridge in Austin reopens to traffic at I-90
AUSTIN, Minn. – The Highway 218 south/21st Street NE bridge at Interstate 90 near the Austin Municipal Airport reopened to traffic on Sept. 11 as crews continue moving toward completion of the Austin I-90 bridges project, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The 21st Street bridge over I-90 and the south ramps were reconstructed. The new bridge crossing also has a wide walkway and includes connections to local trails. Traffic was detoured during this work, which began earlier in 2026.
The remaining bridge in the project, Highway 218 north/14th Street NW, near Riverland Community College will be the last bridge completed during the three-year $49.9 million project, which began in 2024 and includes bridge replacements or improvements at six sites along Austin’s I-90 corridor. That bridge and ramps remain closed and detoured. Completion is expected in November.
