Hwy 194 Mesaba Ave bridge repair closures extended

DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be continuing bridge repair work in the area of Highway 194 (Mesaba Ave), I-35 and Superior Street and will have additional traffic control changes on Aug. 24.

Superior Street directly underneath Mesaba Ave will close Monday, August 24 and remain closed through the end of October. Westbound vehicle traffic will be detoured via 6th Ave W to 1st St to Mesaba Ave to Superior Street. Eastbound vehicle traffic will be detoured on to 1st Street at 24th Ave W and continue on W 1st St, crossing Mesaba Ave, to 6th Ave W to Superior St.

Westbound Highway 194 (Mesaba Ave heading up the hill) between W Superior St and W 1st St will remain closed for approximately two additional weeks. This extended closure is due to unexpected additional concrete work needing to be completed.

The onramp from Mesaba Ave to southbound I-35 will remain closed. Traffic will be detoured on Michigan St to 21st Ave W to Hwy 53 to I-35. This closure is expected to last through the end of September.

A marked pedestrian detour for pedestrian bridge reconstruction travels from Michigan Street to Mesaba Ave to 1st St to 6th Ave W.

Overall project work will last through October and includes bridge rehabilitation, pavement replacement and storm sewer work. Please visit the project website for additional information. Travelers can plan ahead and see updated road closures and traffic conditions at 511mn.org.
