Highway 25 detour between Buffalo and Monticello begins April 21

Expect changes, roadwork through October

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Starting Tuesday, April 21, Highway 25 will close between John Ause Memorial Drive in Buffalo and Cameron Avenue NE south of Monticello as construction kicks off, the Minnesota Department of Transportation reports.

Highway 25 will detour on Highway 55, Wright County Road 12, County Road 37 and County Road 131. Access will be maintained for those who live, work or visit locations within the work zone but temporary hard closures will occur. Follow local signage and plan extra travel time.

To keep workers safe, follow these tips:

  • Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions.
  • Move over and give crews space.
  • Be patient and expect delays.
  • Never enter a road closed with barriers or cones.
  • Expect changing conditions, including lane shifts and equipment.
  • Check 511mn.org or the free app for real-time travel information.

The project will reconstruct seven miles of Highway 25, repair drainage, improve access points and build three roundabouts. Pedestrian and trail improvements will also be added.

In July, the detour will shift as crews rebuild and recycle the road surface using Stabilized Full Depth Reclamation, which requires deep excavation and large equipment.

he road will remain closed to through traffic until late October.

When all lanes reopen in fall 2026, the $11.4 million project will improve safety, drainage and ride quality along Highway 25.
