Foundation Activities

1. Bridges

New Bridge or Bridge Replacement – include the bridge template for each bridge structure. The bridge template includes the foundation activities (BFRxxxx) with the proper predecessors and successors. We will adjust the durations for the foundation activities based on the number of substructures.

Bridge Rehab – typically we are not involved in bridge rehab work and our activities are not included in the bridge rehab template. If you anticipate foundations work needing to be done you should identify this in the scoping report if it is known.

Historic Bridges – We occasionally get involved in these projects to determine existing foundations or have geology staff investigate materials used to construct existing bridge. Contact us if you anticipate needing foundations or geology involvement.

2. Box culverts

Foundation activities (CFRxxxx) are included in the box culvert template with proper predecessors and successors. We typically investigate and provide recommendations on box culverts exceeding 80 SF or at the request of the district for smaller box culverts. We also will investigate for box culvert extensions. Identify the box culverts located within the project and whether there will or will not be any work done on them.

3. Retaining walls

The Foundation Recommendations (FDRxxxx) template should be included in the P6 schedule if any retaining walls are included in the project. Durations will vary depending on the number and length of retaining walls.

Add the FR template in the schedule if retaining walls are anticipated.

4. Noise walls

The Foundation Recommendations (FDRxxxx) template should be included in the P6 schedule if any noise walls are included in the project. Durations will vary depending on the number and length of noise walls.

5. HTCB

The Foundation Recommendations (GEOxxxx) template should be included in the P6 schedule if any HTCB is included in the project. Durations will vary depending on the number of anchors.

  • Predecessor
    1. Identification of HTCB anchor locations (FS). This is a separate activity that is added by the district. Usually it involves a meeting and concurrence with District maintenance staff and the State Patrol.
  • Successor
    1. ADM1000 - Project Turn-In Complete (FS).

6. OH sign structures

The Foundation Recommendations (FDRxxxx) template should be included in the P6 schedule if foundations are needed for any OH sign structures on the project. Durations will vary depending on the number and substructures needed for these OH signs.

8. Signals

The Foundation Recommendations (FDRxxxx) template should be included in the P6 schedule for signals with mast arms 45 feet or greater that will require new foundations.  Durations will vary depending on the number of signals with mast arms greater than 45 feet.

9. Poor soils

For new alignments through poor soils (swamps), embankments or slope failures you should add the Foundation Recommendations (FDRxxxx) template. Durations will vary depending on the length of embankment or alignment through the poor soils.
