Planning Internship Program

MnDOT’s Planning Internship Program is a summer program designed for recent college graduates to understand and support transportation planning efforts across the state. Interns work closely with experienced planning staff to help develop plans, conduct stakeholder engagement, analyze data, manage transportation system performance measures, and more.

Candidates must have a bachelor's or master’s degree in one of the following areas (or a closely related field) by the program start date or one year of professional transportation planning experience.

  • Geography
  • Urban studies
  • Sociology
  • Political science

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.

The MnDOT Planning Internship Program runs from May through August. This internship is available for up to a 12-week, full-time (40 hours/week) appointment with a flexible start date and schedule. As of July 1, 2025, the positions pay between $24.40 and $35.50 per hour.

In-office work schedules can vary depending on the needs of the office and position. Some positions may have the flexibility to work a hybrid schedule.

The Planning Internship Program hires recent graduates for positions across Minnesota. Available positions will be posted when the application period opens in December.

The Planning Internship Program accepts applications from December through January, or until all positions are filled, for the following summer’s cohort. Applications must be submitted through the State of Minnesota Careers website to be considered. All applicants must email unofficial school transcripts to the program manager at Amanada.Bowlin@state.mn.us.
