Hwy 9 improvement project in New London begins June 12

WILLMAR, Minn. – A Minnesota Department of Transportation safety improvement project on Highway 9 in New London gets underway Monday, June 12. Work is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 25. Start and end dates could change due to weather and other unforeseeable circumstances.

Improvements along Highway 9 include sidewalk bump-outs that meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards, mid-block pedestrian crossings, dedicated left-turn lanes at the Country Stop, and the replacement of portions of the retaining wall along the Mill Pond bridge.

Traffic impacts

The majority of work will be done under traffic; however, drivers and pedestrians may encounter shoulder and/or sidewalk closures on Highway 9 during portions of the work. Also, there will be a temporary closure of the southbound right lane on Highway 23 at the Highway 9 junction when crews are working near that intersection.

MnDOT asks drivers to slow down, use caution, and watch for workers and heavy equipment when traveling through the work zone.

Project benefits and cost

Benefits of the project include enhanced driver and pedestrian safety. Landwehr Construction, Inc., is the contractor and the project cost is $922,000.
