Tree clearing work begins March 1 in Red Wing for Hwy 61 bridge replacement project
RED WING, Minn. – Highway 61 motorists Red Wing should be alert near the Withers Harbor area as construction crews begin tree clearing for March 1 in preparation for a bridge replacement project at the site, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The tree-cutting work is scheduled March 1-2, weather permitting. Crews will be working below the bridge at Withers Harbor Drive and should not affect traffic. The clearing is necessary in select areas to make room for construction. The work is being done now so it doesn't disrupt nesting of northern long-eared bats in spring.
This is preparation work for a MnDOT contractor to begin construction April 17 to replace the two bridges at Withers Harbor Drive in Red Wing. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2024.
During the project, crews will:
- Replace the Hwy 61 bridges over Withers Harbor Dr. and Hay Creek in Red Wing.
- Reconstruct the approaches to the bridge from Bench St. to Withers Harbor Dr. and make other road improvements.
