MnDOT provides update on Hwy 23 safety improvement project

WILLMAR, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation would like to thank the community for participating in the community input process for the Highway 23 safety improvement project.  MnDOT would also like to thank members of the advisory group who were integral in helping to analyze potential safety improvements, consider public feedback and give input to MnDOT.

MnDOT is re-analyzing a safety improvement for the intersection of Highway 23 and Highway 9 in New London.  MnDOT hired Pamela Whitmore, Whitmore Resolution Group, to facilitate the community input process, including the formation of an advisory group to assist in the community engagement.

Following a community meeting on Dec. 8, 2022, about funding resources for public improvement projects, MnDOT has wrapped up the formal community input process that is part of re-analyzing the intersection of Highway 23 and Highway 9.

No decision has been made at this time.  Both the interchange and roundabout concepts are being considered.  The next steps of the project process are currently underway.  MnDOT staff are looking at potential funding sources and starting the environmental process for both concepts.

Kandiyohi County has submitted the interchange at the intersection of Highway 23 and Highway 9 for Corridors of Commerce funding.  Awards are anticipated to be announced on May 1, 2023.

MnDOT is anticipating a decision on a selected safety improvement in June 2023.
