Southbound Garfield Avenue in Duluth to close this weekend

Duluth, Minn. – A portion of southbound Garfield Avenue in Duluth will be closed this weekend for bridge demolition.
Southbound Garfield Avenue south of Nelson Street at Goodwill Industries to Blatnik Bridge will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, to 4 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 14. This closure means Superior-bound traffic will not have access to Blatnik Bridge during this time, and motorists should use the Hwy 2/Bong Bridge instead.

This closure is for the demolition of I-535 bridges passing over Garfield Avenue and includes removal of the bridge decks, bridge girders and bridge piers closest to Garfield Avenue. This work is part of the Twin Ports Interchange project that was green-lighted this summer thanks to special funding. It was originally part of the TPI project but was deferred due to a funding gap in 2020.

This closure will accelerate the completion of the demolition by two weeks, creating the possibility for the I-535/Garfield Avenue interchange to reopen earlier in the fall of 2023.
