Highway 65/Third Avenue Bridge reopening postponed to summer 2023

Roseville, Minn. – The Highway 65/Third Avenue Bridge reopening has been postponed to summer 2023 to keep the public and construction crews safe while rehabilitation and preservation work continues. The bridge was originally scheduled to partially reopen to traffic this fall.

The project team is hosting a virtual public meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, to give interested participants a detailed update on the project work and schedule, as well as to respond to questions. Information to access the meeting link can be found on the project webpage.

Motorists, buses, and people walking and bicycling will need to continue to use alternate routes across the river during the closure.

Crews are working quickly to complete additional concrete repairs on the bridge arches and to respond to other challenges that have impacted the project’s timeline, including high river water levels earlier this year and material delays.

The historic Third Avenue Bridge over the Mississippi River near St. Anthony Falls, which opened in 1918, is undergoing major repairs. Construction began in May 2020 and is anticipated to be complete in summer 2023. The work includes renovating the Third Avenue Bridge while preserving and enhancing its historic and artistic features, improving area safety and accessibility, and upgrading walking and bicycling facilities on and approaching the bridge.

Visit the Highway 65/Third Avenue Bridge project webpage for more details about the travel impacts during construction.
