Hwy 77/Cedar Avenue in South Minneapolis closing May 31-June 28

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Motorists traveling on Highway 77/Cedar Avenue in South Minneapolis between W. Lake Nokomis Parkway and Highway 62 will encounter a full closure beginning at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31 to allow the Minnesota Department of Transportation to resurface the pavement and complete universal accessibility and safety improvements in the area. The following ramps will also close at 5 a.m.:

  • Eastbound Highway 62 to Highway 77/Cedar Avenue
  • Westbound Highway 62 to Highway 77/Cedar Avenue
  • Cedar Avenue to westbound Highway 62
  • Cedar Avenue to eastbound Highway 62

Local traffic should follow the posted detour using Portland Avenue.

Motorists on southbound Cedar Avenue should follow the detour using westbound E. 46th Street, southbound I-35W, eastbound Highway 62 and southbound Highway 77.

Motorists on northbound Highway 77 should follow the detour using westbound Highway 62, northbound I-35W, eastbound E. 46th Street and Cedar Avenue.

Highway 77/Cedar Avenue and the ramps at Highway 62 are expected to reopen on Tuesday, June 28.

CenterPoint Energy will also be replacing a natural gas main at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Edgewater Boulevard during the Highway 77/Cedar Avenue closure. Beginning at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, the multiuse trail along the west side of Cedar Avenue, south of W. Lake Nokomis Parkway, will be temporarily rerouted within the work zone through Tuesday, June 28. Pedestrian access through the area will be maintained during construction, as well as access to local residences and businesses.

These road and ramp closures are part of the Highway 77/Cedar Avenue construction project. MnDOT is resurfacing the Highway 77 pavement between the Minnesota River in Bloomington and Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis through fall 2022. The work includes repairs to the 86th Street bridge over Highway 77, upgrades at intersections to provide universal access and drainage improvements.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, and to slow down in work zones where workers are present.
