MnDOT Construction on Hiawatha Avenue/Hwy 55 begins Monday, May 23
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – On Monday, May 23, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin construction on Hiawatha Avenue/Hwy 55 between downtown Minneapolis and Hwy 62. Motorists will encounter a full closure of southbound Hiawatha Avenue near downtown Minneapolis and several area ramp and bridge closures.
- Beginning Monday, May 23, southbound Hiawatha Avenue between downtown Minneapolis and Cedar Avenue will be closed through mid-September. Motorists will be detoured using westbound I-94, southbound I-35W and eastbound Highway 62. In addition, the 8th Street bridge from downtown Minneapolis to southbound Hiawatha Avenue, the ramp from southbound I-35W to southbound Hiawatha Avenue and the ramp from eastbound I-94 to southbound Hiawatha Avenue will be closed. During the closures, traffic will be directed to follow the posted detours.
- Beginning Monday, May 23, Franklin Avenue under Hiawatha Avenue will be closed through May 27. Motorists will be detoured using Bloomington Avenue, 24th Street and Cedar Avenue.
- Beginning in early June, the 7th Street bridge from northbound Hiawatha Avenue into downtown Minneapolis will be closed through late September. Motorists will be detoured using northbound Hiawatha Avenue, 3rd Street, Portland Avenue and 7th Street.
- A weekend closure of I-35W is scheduled for the first weekend in June to allow construction crews to remove the 7th and 8th Street bridge decks over I-35W. Both directions of I-35W between I-94 in Minneapolis and Highway 280 in Lauderdale will be closed during this time.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change. MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, and slowdown in work zones where workers are present.
