169 REDEFINE: Plan on slow or stopped traffic through Elk River

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Motorists who travel through Elk River should be prepared for sudden stops and delays, as the busiest travel season begins this weekend with the Fishing Opener May 14, and the first of three years of Highway 169 Redefine construction is underway.

Highway 10, 169 and 101, are reduced to one-lane, each direction, 24/7, through two Highway 169 work zones in Elk River—on the south end at the Highway 10/101/169 interchange and the north end at 197th Avenue. Expect lanes to shift and change within each work zone until Nov. 1, 2022.

The busiest times to avoid delays:

  • Weekday home/work travelers—early morning or early evening hours
  • Weekend northbound and westbound travelers—Friday afternoon into the evening hours
  • Weekend southbound and eastbound travelers—Sunday afternoon into the evening hours

Local access is maintained, however expect changes. Access to/from Highway 169 at 197th Avenue is closed, use 193rd Avenue or an alternate access. Three traffic signals remain fully operational on Highway 169 and motorists should be prepared to stop at Main Street, School Street and 193rd Avenue.

MnDOT reminds drivers to slow down, avoid distractions and follow traffic signs in work zones.

About the 169 Redefine project
