Hwy 55 project between Wendell and the MN/ND state line starts May 16
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Starting Monday, May 16, weather permitting, Highway 55 will close between County Road 11 in Wendell and Highway 9. The closure marks the first of three closures/detours for the resurfacing project on Highway 55 between Wendell and the Minnesota/North Dakota state line.
For the first stage, traffic will be detoured to Grant County Road 11, Grant County Road 26/Wilkin County Road 4, and Highway 9 until early June.
The work zone for the 22 1/2-mile-long project will be broken down into three stages, with work starting on the east end of the project moving west. During each stage, a portion of Highway 55 will close and thru-traffic will be detoured:
- Stage 1, from Grant County Road 11 in Wendell to Highway 9. Detour: Grant County Road 11, Grant County Road 26/Wilkin County Road 4, Highway 9
- Stage 2, from Highway 9 to Highway 75. Detour: Highway 9, Highway 75
- Stage 3, from Highway 75 to the MN/ND state line. Detour: Highway 75, MN Wilkin County Road 6/ND Richland County Road 16, ND Highway 127
In addition to resurfacing, crews will also replace four box culverts: two in the first stage, one in the second stage and one in the third stage. During those replacements, Highway 55 will be impassable and local traffic will need to find an alternate route around the box culvert sites.
Mark Sand & Gravel Co., based in Fergus Falls, is the prime contractor for the $11 million project. The overall project is expected to be completed by mid-July, weather permitting.
