I-94 in Minneapolis to close overnight June 23-24 for tunnel cleaning
ROSEVILLE, Minn. Motorists traveling on Interstate 94 near the Lowry Tunnel in Minneapolis will encounter overnight closures June 23 and June 24 while crews clean the tunnel.
Westbound I-94 will close from 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 through 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 24. Eastbound I-94 will remain open June 23 while the westbound tunnel is closed to accommodate a detour for a closure of northbound I-35W that night between Highway 62 and I-94.
I-94 will close in both directions at 10 p.m. Wednesday, June 24 through 5 a.m. Thursday, June 25.
Motorists can use the ramps at Hennepin and Lyndale Avenues to return to the interstate.
Crews will also close the ramp from westbound Highway 55 (Hiawatha) to westbound I-94 from 10-11 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 while they wash the ramp tunnel. The Portland Avenue tunnel will be cleaned June 24, while the eastbound Lowry Tunnel is cleaned.
The ramp from eastbound I-394 to eastbound I-94 and ramp from eastbound Highway 55 to eastbound I-94 will also be closed Wednesday, June 24 during the eastbound Lowry Tunnel cleaning.
Crews will clean and make lighting repairs in the tunnels while they are closed.
Tunnel washing serves several purposes. It cleans the tiles, which allows light to properly reflect and removes environmentally harmful materials from the walls and ceilings left by vehicle exhaust before they get in the storm sewer system. Crews capture the water used to wash the tunnels before it enters the sewer system.
Crews also will wash tunnels at Highway 55 under Minnehaha Parkway, and at Fifth Street in St. Paul overnight June 23. That work will require short-term lane closures.
Motorists should plan ahead and give themselves extra time to reach their destination.
