MnDOT to close part of I-35W in Minneapolis Oct. 19-22

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close Interstate 35W in both directions between Interstate 94 and Highway 62 in Minneapolis starting at 10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19.
The closure is needed to complete traffic changes and a water main crossing for the I-35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown reconstruction project. The activities completed during the weekend closure will move the project into the next phase.

Crews will begin closing the ramps for I-35W about one hour before closing the interstate. Southbound I-35W will be open to traffic south of 46th Street. Motorists will be detoured around the closure using Interstate 394, Highway 100 and Highway 62. I-35W will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22.

When I-35W reopens, motorists traveling in the project area will see the following:

  • One lane will be open from northbound I-35W into downtown to 11th Street and East Grant Street. Access into downtown from northbound I-35W has been closed since June 2018. Access from northbound I-35W to Fifth Avenue South remains closed through 2019. Third Street and Washington Avenue continue to be good alternatives into downtown from northbound I-35W.
  • New road in its permanent location on southbound I-35W, just south of the I-35W and I-94 interchange. Motorists will drive on the new road and under the bridge over I-35W south that leads into downtown.

MnDOT continues to encourage people to make a new connection to other forms of transportation such as transit, carpools, MnPASS, and use alternative routes. Additionally, people should consider alternatives to traveling to and from work such as telecommuting or driving during off-peak hours.

An additional weekend closure of I-35W is tentatively planned for early November to demolish the 28th Street bridge over I-35W. The 26th Street bridge will reopen before the 28th Street bridge is demolished.

These closures are part of the larger four-year 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown reconstruction project on I-35W between 43rd Street and downtown Minneapolis. To learn more about the 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project, visit: www.mndot.gov/35w94

The 35W@94 reconstruction project is one of many critical road and bridge improvement projects underway across the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area this summer. These projects represent a significant undertaking to build better roads and a multimodal transportations system that supports a growing economy and a stronger community.
