Whitney pedestrian bridge in Minneapolis reopens Aug. 8

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge, the pedestrian bridge over Interstate 94 between the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and Loring Park, is scheduled to reopen by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8.

The bridge was closed in late April for repainting and to undergo repairs, including restoration of the wooden deck.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation repainted and restored the bridge, a 1988 artwork by Minneapolis-based artist Siah Armajani.

The bridge was refreshed with three colors of paint and the tarnished metal letters of the John Ashbery poem that line the interior of the bridge were replaced with new metal letters. The restoration work was completed in advance of an upcoming art exhibit by Siah Armajani opening at the Walker Art Center on Sept.  9, 2018.

The opening of the Whitney Bridge completes the final work for the I-94 Minneapolis to Brooklyn Center project. Visit the web page for more information on the work that was done: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/i94brooklyncntr/
