Northbound I-35 single lane restrictions, traffic switch in Forest Lake occurs Wednesday, June 20
ROSEVILLE, Minn. — On Wednesday, June 20, motorists traveling on northbound Interstate 35 between Highway 97 and Highway 8 in Columbus and Forest Lake will encounter a single lane of traffic as crews work to complete a traffic switch.
Northbound I-35 will be reduced to one lane from 5 a.m. until noon, while crews shift all traffic to the far right driving lanes. Once completed, concrete barriers will not separate the northbound driving lanes and motorists will no longer have to choose the right lane ahead of time to exit to Broadway Avenue or Highway 8.
This traffic configuration is expected to continue until late July or early August. Once northbound paving is done, Interstate 35 will reopen to three driving lanes. Crews will then begin work on the southbound lanes and reduce southbound traffic to two lanes for paving.
Traffic delays and backups are expected throughout the course of the two-year project, especially ahead of the Fourth of July. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Motorists are advised to check 511 for daily real-time traffic updates by visiting 511mn.org or calling 5-1-1.
The work is part of the I-35 North Metro Split project, which includes resurfacing the existing pavement from the I-35W/I-35E split to Highway 8; replacing the Highway 97 bridge with a diverging diamond interchange; replacing the northbound I-35W bridge over I-35E and the westbound Highway 8 bridge over I-35. The project will provide a better ride quality, as well as improve safety and traffic flow at the Highway 97 interchange.
