I-35W weekend closure in Minneapolis scheduled Sept 29-Oct 2

Portland Avenue bridge over I-94 to close Sept 30

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Interstate 35W will close in both directions between I-94 and Highway 62 in Minneapolis, beginning at 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29, as crews prepare for the demolition of the Franklin Avenue bridge.

Crews will begin closing the on and off ramps for I-35W approximately one hour prior to closing the interstate.

Motorists will be detoured around the closure using I-394, Highway 100 and Highway 62.  I-35W will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2.

In addition, the Portland Avenue bridge spanning I-94 will close to motorists beginning at 5 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 30. However, the bridge will remain open to pedestrians, bicyclists, ambulances and police.  Motorists should follow the posted detour using 15th Street to Chicago Avenue to Franklin Avenue.

The Portland Avenue bridge is expected to reopen in late-November, weather permitting.

A second weekend closure of I-35W will take place from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9 to complete the Franklin Avenue bridge demolition.

These closures are part of the larger four-year 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown reconstruction project on I-35W between 43rd Street and downtown Minneapolis. The work includes reconstructing pavement, bridges and ramps on I-35W, adding new access ramps to the Lake Street Business District and building a new transit station on the interstate. Once complete, motorists and residents will have better accessibility, safety and mobility in the area.  Work is expected to be completed in fall 2021.
