Public open houses for High Bridge/Hwy 149 construction set for Aug. 16, Aug. 22

Smith Avenue High Bridge in St. Paul to close Sept. 5 through fall 2018

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The public is invited to learn about upcoming construction planned for the Smith Avenue High Bridge in St. Paul and Highway 149 between St. Paul and Mendota Heights at one of two open houses.

The first open house will be held Aug. 16 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Capital View Cafe, 637 Smith Ave. in St. Paul. A second open house will be held Aug. 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in the community room at Bad Weather Brewery, 414 West Seventh St. in St. Paul.

The Smith Avenue High Bridge is scheduled to close Sept. 5 through fall 2018, weather permitting, while crews reconstruct the bridge deck. Temporary lane closures on Smith Avenue between West 7th Street and George Street will continue through August as crews prepare for the demolition of the current bridge deck.

Reconstruction of the bridge deck is part of a larger project on Smith Avenue and Dodd Road, also known as Highway 149. Additional work on Smith Avenue and Dodd Road is scheduled to begin in spring 2018. This includes:

  • Resurfacing Smith Avenue and Dodd Road—Highway 149—between West 7th Street in St. Paul and I-494 in Mendota Heights.
  • Improving drainage, sidewalks and pedestrian accessibility.
  • Replacing signals at five Highway 149 intersections.
  • Constructing an additional left turn lane from westbound I-494 to southbound Dodd Road in Mendota Heights.

The project will extend the lifespan of Highway 149 and the High Bridge, provide a smoother road surface and improve pedestrian and bicycle accommodations on the bridge.

This work is expected to cause delays for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists who use the Smith Avenue High Bridge or cross beneath it. Visit the project website for a current list of anticipated closures.

Open house attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the overall project and get details about specific project elements, project schedule and next steps in the overall plans for the High Bridge, Smith Avenue and Dodd Road. Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation and project staff will be on hand to answer questions.
