After temporary repairs, Stillwater Lift Bridge open for morning rush hour
Overnight closure planned tonight for permanent fix
ROSEVILLE, Minn. –Morning commuters will be able to cross the St. Croix River on the Highway 36 Stillwater Lift Bridge this morning after MnDOT’s Electrical Services Section (ESS) completed temporary repairs to the main power cable on the bridge. Crews worked throughout the night and the bridge reopened just before 4:30 a.m. The normal lift schedule also will resume this morning.
The bridge will close again at 10 p.m. tonight to allow crews to make permanent repairs to the cable. It will remain closed until 6 a.m. Thursday. In case of inclement weather, the permanent repairs will be postponed until Thursday night.
A malfunction in an electrical meter socket that monitors power usage at the Stillwater lift bridge failed at 12:05 p.m. yesterday and caused the bridge to stop about 30 feet above the water, 3/4 of the way up. The bridge again stalled just before 8:30 p.m. about halfway up during testing after the electric meter socket was repaired. Workers had to be lowered from the lift span by bucket truck.
