Feedback sought on pedestrian flashing beacon in Litchfield

WILLMAR, Minn. — A survey taking feedback on the pedestrian flashing beacon test in Litchfield is open until January 20, 2018.  Residents are encouraged to take the short survey so that MnDOT and the city of Litchfield can better gather feedback on the intersection of Highway 12 and 3rd Street.

Highway 12 will be reconstructed in downtown Litchfield in 2020.  As part of the project process, all intersections have been thoroughly analyzed.  The traffic signal at the intersection of 3rd Street and Highway 12 has been evaluated and MnDOT is recommending that it be removed.

When MnDOT made the recommendation to remove the traffic signal, the primary concern was how to safely get pedestrians across the highway.  There are several cost effective options that serve pedestrians and cause less delays for drivers.  The recommended option is a pedestrian flashing beacon.

MnDOT and the city of Litchfield have partnered to test a pedestrian flashing beacon at Highway 12 and 3rd Street for a period of 90 days.  MnDOT and the City of Litchfield surveyed the community after 30 days and is surveying the community again as the testing period is nearing completion.  All feedback, along with the traffic data, will be presented to the Litchfield City Council on February 5, 2018.  The on-line survey is available now at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/litchfieldpedbeacon.
